Since holiday’s etymological origin stems from holy day,
shouldn’t every morning we wake to the miracle of life—
on a planet able to sustain our fragile, wondrous forms—
be celebrated as holy?
Each rising of the sun—because of course we know
that radiant sphere of plasma doesn’t move at all,
but that we, small Earth, revolve around it—
still feels like an arrival.
Shouldn’t that be celebrated, honored with the awe it deserves?
Could we not pause, at least once a day,
to breathe our thanks in silence?
And when the sun lowers itself to the horizon,
appearing to fall into the sea,
is that not yet another reason to honor Creation?
Of course there are birthdays, memorials,
national observances to honor great contributions to the whole.
But how can appreciation wait for ceremony?
Each breath is reason enough.
Snow, wind, and rain—all miracles, in their turn.
Tides retreat and return.
Birds sing their intricate songs.
Wild things call across the darkest expanse.
To bear witness to such abundance—
to remember that it happens without our intervention—
is more than enough.
If I were to invent a holiday,
it would be this:
A day that begins in wonder,
and ends in gratitude.

Pololu Sunrise ~ 2017 bj
Yes, every day is sacred! 🙏🏼 Your photo is beautiful, the light is very Bierstadt. 🖼️
I took this photo at sunrise years ago with a phone camera that was not as good as the one I have now, but damn! It’s hard to beat that morning light in Hawaii. Of course then there’s the top of Cadillac Mountain … 💗😉
As my father used to say: “Every day I get up out of bed is a good day”. I try, not always successfully, to remember that. (K)
All these little gems of wisdom dropped in our path over a lifetime like Hansel and Gretel with their breadcrumbs. Sometimes we recognize them, sometimes we think they’re just stones. ♥️
Yes, and we walk like we have grit in our shoes!
And then suddenly, we realize we’re not meant to tread harshly on them, but to let them gently guide us home! xo
