She finds herself buried in thoughts most days,
too many, she thinks, for optimal health; but there are
countless directions, too much information, misinformation,
potential consequences, future outcomes over which
she has little control, so why not simply let it all go?
She is not made of steel like most of them think, impervious
to slights and hurts, no, her skin is thin and getting thinner,
translucent, one might say, like looking through crystal
into bare anatomy, the heart, organs, kidneys, lungs,
and one day, it seems certain, she will appear to all
(not just herself) naked, but bare in the way of having
no more defenses, and what then? What now?

How to proceed in a world that requires armor,
at least protection from the elements, from one another,
from the painful accusations and realizations that the life
she constructed is hollow, more full of holes than a tree
sculpted by woodpeckers feasting on insects, the food
they must repeatedly hammer for with their heads simply
to nourish the beautiful bodies Creation has lent them
in this life, and here am I, dealing with a longtime
bladder infection, too much stress, too little time
to remember the tides rolling in, then sucking back out
and depositing, leaving heaven knows what
to the vast ocean, the whole that contains all our joys
and all our sorrows;

And I wonder much and discover little I did not already
know in its essence; have I had enough? Learned
all I came here to discover? And yet and still,
earth beckons, grass cries out to have its tedium
of carpet interrupted by islands of shrubs and flowers
I have yet to plant, and so in the end, it is
She who fastens me here, delights me daily, asking
nothing while giving much, and one day, I am certain,
I will return to myself amazed at what is left
on the beach and what is swept back out to sea.
