The land still listens, though we do not answer.
We have learned to speak to the wrong gods—
technology, televised evangelists, telecommunication—
forgetting the source to which we owe our lives.
Our flesh remembers dolphin and tree,
remembers the cliffs that yawn above the desert
and the salt expanse of ocean light.
We are of the Earth, and of the stars as well,
though most have forgotten those origins,
forging our brief tenure as if alone.
Dogs howl at night and we curse the noise,
not thinking to step into the cold
to see what the moon is saying.
Trees wail in wind, struck to their core,
but we hear only branches clattering—
never the message in their grief.
We’ve tuned our nervous systems
to the static of twenty-first-century life.
The subtler signals are not lost—
only unheard.
And this conversation should go both ways,
as every true conversation does.
Mother Earth still waits, an ample goddess
with room on her lap for all of us.
If we sit in wonder and listen,
her breath will steady ours again.

Love this! ❤️
Thank you!! 🙏♥️
We are so out of synch with life…yes, we must stop, listen–the earth has much to say to us. (K)
In all ways. 🙏
I have said it before to your dear readers (and I’m sure I will continue saying it) but every morning I feed the wild deer, and this morning there were eleven of them. Have been doing it ever since we moved here some twelve years ago. I talk to them and many of them are familiar friends.
The deer, along with all the other wild animals, are part of the beautiful, natural world. We are so, so lucky to be living in a rural part of Southern Oregon, just a few miles to the south-west from Mount Sexton.
Paul, it’s always a delight to hear from you and I for one never tire of hearing stories such as yours. For those with eyes open, we witness the most amazing interactions with this beautiful planet. How people can be blind to this, how they can cluster in dirty corners and act out violence and addictions … may have something to do with the way they have removed themselves from the ground of their existence.
Sending you blessings and good cheer on another beautiful day! Good to hear from you. ♥️
Frequently Jean and I bemused beyond comprehension at the goings on by some of us humans. Thank goodness for dogs! (And the deer!)
